The school has two main departments: English and German. They offer three-year-long programs leading up to B.A. level, with concentrations in either Linguistics or Literature. In accordance with its name (Wyższa Szkoła Języków Obcych literally means College of Foreign Languages), the school’s magnet is a wide selection of additional language courses (over fifteen), including major European languages and a few important languages of the world. Additionally, WSJO’s Summer School of Polish (for non-native Polish speakers) is scheduled to start within the next two years.
Aside from language courses, one of the school’s greatest strengths, the focus is on sound knowledge of liberal studies, including courses in philosophy, psychology, education, cultural studies – balanced a strong emphasis on media communication and information technology. Although focused on teaching the graduate level, the school attaches importance to research; this is enabled by growing library holdings, computer facilities, and exchange programs. Currently, the research focuses on such areas as bilingual lexicography, translation, popular culture, and spoken language description.
The English Department is the school’s biggest unit. It employs many experienced educators. The head is Professor Roman Kalisz (UG). Other permanent faculty members include: Professor Anna Cieślicka (UAM), Dr. Tomasz Fojt (UG) Dr. Przemysław Żywiczyński, Dr. Małgorzata Chrzan, Dr. Sylwia Wiśniewska. The focus is on language and culture. The courses are include: Introduction to Literary Studies, History of American Literature, History of British Literature, History of Great Britain, History of USA, Introduction of Linguistics, Descriptive Grammar of English, History of the English Language, Contrastive Polish-English Grammar, British English Phonetics, American English Phonetics, Academic Writing, Practical English Grammar, Integrated English Course, Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Philosphy, Latin, Methodology of Teaching, Introduction to Information Technology. Additional courses: Varieties of English, Practical Rhetoric, Media and Communication, Translation, Interpreting, Introduction to Lexicography, Business English.
